February events at MY Museum

Homeschool Classes

EARTHQUAKE!!!

February 2, 1st-5th grade

February 9, Preschool-Kindergarten

9:30-10:15

Living in California, earthquakes are something that most of us will experience in our lifetime.  Sometimes they are so little you barely feel them and other times they shake entire buildings to the ground.  What do you do if you are in one and how can you prepare?  Seaside firefighter, Johnny Subia and Lola, natural disaster search dog will be at MY Museum to talk with the students about earthquake safety and give a demonstration of how Lola finds people who are trapped after a natural disaster.  We will also be exploring ways that students can make their own disaster preparedness kit at home!

Naturally Occurring Phenomena & Optical Illusions

February 16, 1st-5th grade

9:30-10:15

Have you ever wondered how a rainbow is made and where it ends?  Or why is there a glowing ring around the moon?  The Northern Lights dance around the polar sky, but where do they come from?  What are sailing stones, fire tornadoes, sun dogs and mirages?  Find out the answers to these questions and learn about many more strange, exciting things that take place in nature!

Tweet, Tweet, Time to Feed the Birds

February 23, Preschool-Kindergarten

9:30-10:15

Winter is a tough time for our local birds that do not migrate south for the winter, although not as tough as in snowy areas, but they could still use our help.  Your little ones will be learning about some of the wonderful song birds that live in our area and how they can identify them, mostly right in their own backyard!  We will be making some tasty little treats and bird feeders that will attract our local flying buddies right up to your window where your students can practice their birding skills!

We have some exciting news regarding our homeschool schedule, instead of just one class per month we are going to have four!!!  The first and third Tuesday of the month will be for homeschool children 1st-5th grade and the second and fourth Tuesday of the month will be strictly for pre-school and kindergarten age students!  We have so many great activities planned for our home school students this year such as: Earthquake Day, Dr. Seuss Day, foreign languages and cultures, multi-ethnic activities, nature classes focusing on our local flora and fauna, lessons that teach about our diverse ecosystems in Monterey County and the surrounding areas, special guests and speakers and much much more!

$10 per class for non-members (includes admission to MYM for the day) FREE for MYM members Registration is required 831.649.6444

Tinker Tuesday

Tuesday February 23rd from 11 - 2

At MY Museum, play gets even more active in the winter months. You can't go outside as much, so come join us inside in the Construction Zone! Work hard and play hard on this kid-powered construction site where kids can design and build to their heart's content. Parents, kick back and watch your little builders in action, or build with them for loads of fun.

Use a number of building materials to construct your own creation such as Moonsand, Legos®, Superstructs and builder boards which allow for plenty of imagination and teamwork -- and of course, amazing structures.
